I’m Joni (they/them), the bird enthusiast human behind JonnyBird Australia. I’m based in Perth, but my birdwatching journey has taken me right across the country—from the coastal wetlands of Western Australia to the forests, deserts and open plains further afield.
Birdwatching has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. What began as quiet moments spotting wrens and honeyeaters in my local parks has grown into a lifelong passion for discovering Australia’s extraordinary birdlife. For me, it’s never just about identifying a species—it’s about taking the time to notice the way each bird connects to its landscape, its season, and its place in the bigger picture of nature.
Outside of birdwatching, I work for a solar panel company. I love being part of an industry that’s helping to shape a more sustainable future. It feels good to know that the work I do every day contributes to cleaner energy and projects that make a positive impact on both people and the environment – plus birds!
Through this blog, I share stories from the field, reflections on conservation, and tips I’ve picked up while travelling and birdwatching around Australia. Sometimes it’s the excitement of seeing a black cockatoo sweep across the Perth sky, other times it’s the simple joy of spotting a fairy-wren darting through suburban gardens.
